Results that make us safer.

  • Tore down problem buildings, including a strip mall containing a liquor store and an adult book store, to create the Gale Campus Park. Leveraged funds from multiple sources to secure a Community Center for the site. The building, now under construction, will include a full-size gym, a green roof and other energy saving features.
  • Secured a state-of-the-art new fire station for Rogers Park to be constructed this year on the 7300 Block of Clark Street across from Touhy Park.

Results for our children.

  • Led the fight to construct the new Jordan School, the New Field School, and the Gale School Annex. These new schools helped eliminate overcrowded classrooms and provide our children with a secure learning environment.
  • Helped to bring the Chicago Math and Science Academy to Rogers Park.
  • Brought a new library to Rogers Park and fought for the addition of a Reading Garden

Results that keep us moving forward.

  • Construction of a new Howard El Station is underway and will result in a brighter, safer, accessible station for transit users and an improved frontage to improve the streetscape.
  • Secured $800,000 from the CTA to improve the Morse/Lunt El Station with improved lighting and a new canopy roof.

Results to protect the environment.

  • Protected the lakefront from any possibility of a Lake Shore Drive expansion or development of a marina.
  • Secured funding to expand Hartigan Park and preserved Triangle Park.
  • Secured funding for a new Berger Park playground and made the Chicago Park District agree to improve the Berger Park Field house.
  • Refurbished the Harold Washington Playlot with new playground equipment.

All the projects now underway were subject to a thorough community review process even if the project required no zoning change. Any future projects will be subject to that same extensive process.

CLARK STREET

New Fire Station, 7340 N. Clark Street

Demolition of the existing structures on this site is scheduled to begin next week according to the Public Building Commission, and construction of our new $8.4 million fire station will begin after building permits are issued. The Public Building Commission has said the new state-of-the-art fire station will be completed by late Summer 2008. It will replace the aging facility at 1723 W. Greenleaf, which was constructed at the turn of the last century, when fire equipment was pulled by horses.

Former Clark Mega Mall Site, 7212 N. Clark Street

The property was recently sold and the new owner bought the Mega Mall business out of its remaining lease. The new owner is planning to demolish the existing structure and build a residential or a mixed residential and commercial development on the site. He has no specific plans at this time. The 49th Ward Zoning and Land Use Advisory Committee and I will be meeting with the new owner later this Spring to discuss the property, and any proposed use of the site will be subject to a complete and thorough community review process.

Former Adelphi Theater Site, 7070-7078 N. Clark / 1767 W. Estes (Clark and Estes)

Construction is scheduled to begin later this year on a 32-unit, five-story mixed residential and commercial development that will include four affordable condominium units monitored by the CPAN program. Start of the project was delayed because the project required two zoning variations from the Zoning Board of Appeals to allow for the construction of a clock tower and to narrow a gap on Clark Street between the new development and the existing building to its south. The Zoning Board of Appeals approved the zoning variations last month and the project is now in permit review.

HOWARD STREET

Former Lerner Newspaper Building Site, 7519 N. Ashland (Howard and Ashland)

The current owner of the site failed to develop the property as promised. Last Fall, I asked the City of Chicago to begin the process of acquiring the property by eminent domain. The City issued a Request for Proposals, seeking development proposals for the site. Two proposals were submitted, and the 49th Ward Zoning and Land Use Advisory Committee and I will be working with the City to evaluate the proposals to determine their viability. Any proposed development will be subject to a complete and thorough community review process.

Former Chicago Discount Cleaners Site, 1523-35 W. Howard

A five-story building containing ground floor commercial space and 28 condominium units will be constructed on this site, which will also include the current Howard Tire Store and several vacant storefronts. The developer has indicated that the project is scheduled to be completed by Spring 2009.

MORSE AVENUE

Former Morseview Drugstore Site, 1444-46 W. Morse

Construction has begun on a six-story, mixed-use building at the northeast corner of Morse and Greenview. It will feature 12 condominiums, some of them duplexes. It will include one CPAN unit. Rogers Park's economic development corporation, DevCorp North, will locate its offices on the ground and mezzanine floors.

Top Hat Lounge Site, 1412-16 W. Morse

Construction is currently scheduled to begin in August 2007 on a new five-story, 16-unit condominium building at the current site of the Top Hat Lounge. Demolition permits have been issued and the building permit is in review. The building will contain a restaurant/coffee shop on the first floor.
