  • Community Meeting on Chicago's 2016 Olympic Bid Proposal

    Dear Neighbor,

    As part of its pledge to hold community meetings in all 50 wards, the Chicago 2016 Committee will hold a public hearing in the 49th Ward on Chicago's 2016 Olympic bid. The meeting will be held on Wednesday, August 5th, 7:00 p.m. at the Rogers Park Library, 6907 N. Clark. 2016 Olympic Committee President, Lori Healey, will lead a presentation, and there will be time for questions and answers and comments from the community.

  • Sheridan Road Resurfacing Begins

    I am pleased to report that work has begun on a complete resurfacing of Sheridan Road from the Evanston border south to Devon Avenue. The work will also include repairs to curbs and gutters and sewer and water mains where needed.

  • Layoffs and Furloughs Present Challenges to City Service Delivery

    Dear Neighbor,

    If you've been reading my City Council Reports, you know that the City of Chicago faces a severe budgetary crisis not seen in at least 25 years. This crisis is not unique to Chicago, but is being faced by cities and towns across the nation.

    Over eighty percent of the city budget is devoted to personnel costs--paying the salary and benefits of city workers. In an effort to cut costs, the vast majority of non-sworn city workers will not be paid for city holidays for the rest of the year. In addition, employees making over $35,000 a year will be required to take six unpaid furlough days. Two unions refused to go along with these measures, and the city laid off over 400 employees from those unions.

  • Help is Available to Possibly Lower Your Property Tax Bill

    Dear Neighbor,

    Over three hundred people attended last our Property Assessment Appeals Seminar to get help on appealing their property assessment. Because of the overwhelming response, I have asked the Chicago Tax Assistance Center (CTAC) to come to my 49th Ward Service Office next week to provide one-on-one assistance for people who wish to appeal their assessment and possibly lower their property tax bill.

    The expert staff at CTAC will be available to meet with you personally next Wednesday, July 22nd, 3 p.m. to 8 p.m., at my 49th Ward Service Office, 7356 N. Greenview (at Jarvis).
