More Street Sweeping News

Dear Neighbor,
I have some additional news to report on Street Sweeping, which starts on Tuesday. The city's Streets and Sanitation Department will be using color-coded street sweeping signs to tell motorists when parking bans are in effect. Rather than using the traditional orange "no parking" signs exclusively, the Department will use a different color for each day of the week.

Street Sweeping Season Begins Tuesday--Schedule Now Available

Street sweeping season begins officially this Tuesday, April 1st. While the 49th Ward street sweeper is already out cleaning the streets as weather permits, Tuesday marks the first day this year that the city will post the orange "no parking" street sweeping signs.

Metra Stop to be Cleaned and Greened

Dear Neighbor,
Beginning this summer, Metra commuters will be greeted by a wonderful array of flowers and native plants as they board their train. I'm pleased to report that the Rogers Park Garden Group has adopted a portion of the Rogers Park Metra stop as its 2008 Community Garden Project. The east embankment between the Greenleaf and Lunt entrances to the Rogers Park Metra stop will be the focus of the group's efforts.
Please join your neighbors in the Garden Group to help clean and prepare the site this Sunday, March 30th at 1:00 p.m. Meet at the corner of Ravenswood and Greenleaf.

For the last six weeks, hundreds of 49th Ward residents have met in the Loyola Park Fieldhouse and learned about the link between our daily activities and the environmental challenges we face in the world and our community. Together, we have learned what we can do to make the 49th Ward the greenest and most environmentally sustainable community in the nation!

Seniors: Sign Up For Free Public Transit Rides

If you are 65 years of age or older, you are now eligible for free rides on the CTA, Metra and Pace. The free-ride program is part of an Illinois law enacted in January that devised a long-term funding solution for mass transit.

Do You Have A Water Meter in Your Building? READ THIS!

If you own property that has a City of Chicago water meter, you need to know this important information. If your property does not contain a city water meter, please disregard this message.
Last fall, the City of Chicago Department of Water Management began installing new Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) devices on existing water meters in the 49th Ward. The new AMR devices will enable the Water Department to read the meters from remote locations, which means that city Water Department employees will no longer require access to your home or property to read your water meter.

Police Commander Rottner Named New Deputy Chief

Congratulations to our 24th Police District Police Commander Bruce Rottner! Chicago's new Police Superintendent, Jody Weis, has selected Commander Rottner, to be part of his new leadership team as the new Deputy Chief of Patrol for Area 3. Area 3 covers all the north side police districts, including the 24th District. Commander Rottner will assume his new assignment on Sunday.

Demolition of Former North Shore School Building

Dear Neighbor,
I am writing to bring you up to date on the status of the old North Shore School building at 1217 W. Chase. As you may recall, I hosted a community meeting on this issue last July.
The current owner of the property, Swanette Triem, began to demolish the building yesterday. She intends to replace it with a landscaped parking lot, with permeable pavement, for use of the tenants of an adjacent apartment building she owns.
