Alderman Joe Moore's
16th Annual Back to School 49th Ward Family Picnic

Each year Alderman Joe Moore, with the help of a host of generous co-sponsors, hosts a Back to School Family Picnic as a means of reminding our children and their familes of the importance of attending school the very first day it opens.  School funding is dependent on first day attendance.  This year, thousands attended the picnic where we served more than 2,500 free meals.

We gave away packages of school supplies to over 1,000 children.  Fifty very lucky children won backpacks loaded with more supplies including all the items on the Chicago Public Schools recommended supply list.  In addition to participating in lots of fun activities like a Jumping Jack, Face Painting, Dance Contests and Games, students received free dental exams and other services.

The photos below are:

Winners of the dance contest are rewarded with backpack prizes.

Moore Honored for Big Box Living Wage Ordinance

On Labor Day, union members and their families cheered as the Chicago Federation of Labor presented "Living Wage Warrior" awards to the 35 Chicago aldermen who voted to pass the Big Box Living Wage Ordinance.

"These 35 men and women took a bold step on behalf of working families in Chicago," said CFL President Dennis Gannon.  "The Big Box Living Wage Ordinance is about equality and raising the standards of living in our communities.  We commend them on Labor Day for taking a stand on this issue that will have a positive impact on the lives of hardworking men and women."

Joe Moore joins Ron Powell, President of Local 881 of the United Food & Commercial Workers and 500 UFCW workers at the April 26th Rally in support of the Big Box Living Wage Ordinance.  Alderman Moore's ordinance was passd by the Chicago City Council in July but later vetoed by Mayor Daley.  The fight for a Living Wage continues.

National Notes

Joe joins Democracy For America at Governor's Day at the 2005 State Fair.  Joe and other progressive leaders addressed the group that helped refocus the national Democratic Party on grass- roots up political organizing.

Joe Moore is pictured here with Washington D.C. Mayor and 2005 President of the National League of Cities, Anthony Williams.  Joe, as a board member with the National League of Cities, visited Washington D.C. in July 2005 to lobby the United States Congress to save Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Funds.  The Washington Nationals' shirt was gift from Mayor Williams who couldn't bear another look at Joe's flamoyant Cubs' shirt.
