Looking to Buy an Old Firehouse? Greenleaf Firehouse on the Market

Posted: 2/12/2013

Dear Neighbor,

The old Greenleaf Avenue Firehouse is up for sale.  Located at 1723 W. Greenleaf (just east of Clark), the venerable station has stood vacant since early 2009 when Fire Department personnel and equipment moved to the new Rogers Park firehouse on Clark, just north of Touhy.

You might recall the Rogers Park/West Ridge Historical Society once expressed strong interest in moving its offices and museum to the location.  I secured a commitment from the City to transfer the property to the Historical Society and hosted a community meeting in July, 2009, to discuss the proposal.

Though the idea of a history museum at the site garnered overwhelming community support, the Historical Society ultimately determined it could not afford the cost of rehabilitating the building.  The Historical Society offices and a small museum now are located at the intersection of Morse and Greenview.

The City is not selling the firehouse at a fixed price but, rather, soliciting proposals for the use and purchase of the property.  This means the City does not necessarily intend to sell the firehouse to the highest bidder, but rather will work with my office and community residents to ensure a use that is most beneficial to the surrounding neighborhood.

The two-story firehouse first opened in 1920.  It is approximately 6,400 square feet in size and rests on an 8,900-square-foot lot.  The property currently is zoned RT-4, which allows for a residential use only.  However, I would consider supporting a zoning change if the proposed use met with community approval.

Sincerely,
