New Water Mains and Sewer Work on Tap for 49th Ward

Dear Neighbor,

I'm pleased to report that large portions of Lunt Avenue in the 49th Ward will receive new water mains this summer.  Work has already begun on Lunt from Ravenswood to Ridge, and will soon begin on Lunt from Sheridan to Ashland.  Both projects are scheduled for completion in October.  

The projects will replace water mains that are nearly 100 years old, and hopefully prevent the cave-ins and sink holes that have afflicted the street over the last several years.  The total cost for both projects is $1.4 million.

As an added bonus, the entire length of Lunt from Sheridan to Ridge will be re-surfaced after the water main work is completed thanks to a combination of the water main project and a street resurfacing allocation approved by the voters at last April's Participatory Budgeting election.

Several blocks of 49th Ward sewers are also slated to new receive lining.  Sewer lining extends the life of a sewer by sealing over cracks and structural defects in the pipeline, enhancing the pipe's structural strength, and restoring hydraulic capacity.  It is far less expensive and disruptive to the neighborhood than replacing the existing sewers, as it is not necessary to tear up an entire street to line a sewer.

The following blocks are slated for sewer lining this year:

  • Ravenswood (east side) from Pratt to Morse
  • Touhy from Bell to Western
  • Western from Jarvis to Howard
  • Paulina from Jarvis to Rogers

Total cost for all four projects is estimated at $750,000.  The projects are slated to begin this fall and be completed by next February.

These capital projects are funded by a combination of federal stimulus funds and City of Chicago general obligation bonds and are not funded by my "aldermanic menu," which was the subject of the 49th Ward's Participatory Budgeting initiative.
