In the midst of a state budget crisis and deep cuts to state funding for Chicago Public Schools, I have established an action committee that will work to promote and improve Rogers Park’s neighborhood public schools.
The Committee on Rogers Park Schools (CORPS) will work to improve communication among school and community leaders, my ward service office, and administrators at Chicago Public Schools. The committee will also support positive messaging about our schools and plans to produce regular emails keep the entire community informed of the great work taking place at our schools.
CORPS is chaired by Jennifer Clark, Associate Vice President of Campus and Community Planning at Loyola University and includes all six school principals, local school council members representing each school and community residents with expertise in education and a demonstrated commitment to our local schools.
CORPS is working cooperatively to determine the assets and needs of our local neighborhood schools–Eugene Field, Gale, Jordan, Kilmer, New Field, and Sullivan–and how my office, working with the community can promote those assets and address their needs. In the coming months, CORPS will work with me to send out informational emails about the growth and successes of these schools so that everyone who lives in Rogers Park can share the pride we have in our rapidly improving neighborhood schools. We are also working to raise funds for our local schools.
We are privileged to have six exceptional principals who are committed not only to the success of their own school but also to the success of Rogers Park as a diverse and inclusive community. We will continue to build new options in Rogers Park for every type of family and every type of learner so that no family ever feels compelled to leave Rogers Park in search of quality school options for their children.
I invited a diverse group of neighborhood leaders to join CORPS based on their proven commitment to our local schools and their expertise on educational issues. I am pleased that within just a few months, they have become a unified voice in promoting our neighborhood public schools to current school families, prospective parents, and the general community. They want our schools to be seen for what they are–proven assets that serve the broad range of students in our community.
Here are the committee members:
